As of late, I’ve noticed a trend in the subject matter of three paintings. The images involve one horse in a different environment each. Landscape and mood are also strong themes. Each horse has a “far away” expression almost like they are deep in thought or concern. Could it be that the images are a self portrait of some sort? Strange how I chose to create three paintings of almost the same thing without even being aware.

Judsons Art Outfitters have an assortment of outdoor painting supplies. My favorite is a 6″ x 8″ painting box called a Guerrilla Pochade. It fits perfectly on the steering wheel of our Ranger. With this setup, painting outside in the wind and cold of winter is possible. Featured are two on location paintings painted from the inside of the cab.

When it’s -40 below zero it’s hard to imagine summer was ever here. The air is so extreme and terminating that it’s almost like the earth is going through it’s annual disinfecting period. Maybe, the deep freeze is necessary to weed out any living thing that doesn’t belong here. I always think the scouring winds that blow in the spring serve a similar purpose. The end of summer, however, is a peaceful and agreeable time as I’ve tried to express in this painting.

November 15, 2008 through April 19, 2009, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian will be featuring a solo exhibit called “Works by Chessney Sevier”. The show will showcase pieces I’ve created over the past 10 years. This is a very big honor for me and I would like to show some of the pieces in the show here online.
